Reporting to the Controller and serving as a key member of OMEP’s finance and administrative team, the Staff Accountant works full time to assist the Finance department with a variety of professional accounting duties. The position requires knowledge of basic accounting, office administration contract management, and grants compliance is a plus. The Staff Accountant must be highly organized, attentive to detail and accuracy, and possess exceptional interpersonal skills. This position requires excellent computer skills, self-initiation and self-direction, time management skills, and a demonstrated passion for OMEP’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting Support

  • Assist with recording financial transactions in the general ledger in accordance with GAAP
  • Help prepare and post journal entries under supervision
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities
  • Maintain organized and accurate financial records

Grant & Fund Accounting Support

  • Assist with tracking grant revenues and expenses by funding source and program
  • Help ensure expenses are coded correctly and supported by required documentation
  • Support preparation of basic grant financial reports and reimbursement requests
  • Monitor grant budgets and flag potential issues to senior accounting staff

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Process vendor invoices and expense reimbursements
  • Assist with accounts receivable, including grant billings and deposits
  • Help reconcile bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts

Payroll & Benefits

  • Maintain employee data
  • Ensure leave and project hours have been recorded accurately and timely
  • Ensure that staff are paid on time and accurately
  • Assist with monthly payroll allocation to general ledger
  • Ensure benefit providers are paid timely
  • Ensure employee deductions are accurate

Reporting & Administrative Support

  • Prepare basic financial reports and schedules
  • Assist with audit preparation and information requests
  • Support data entry and spreadsheet maintenance

Learning & Collaboration

  • Work closely with senior accounting staff to learn non-profit and grant accounting practices
  • Collaborate with program staff to understand funding requirements
  • Participate in improving accounting processes and internal controls

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 1-3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Basic Excel skills and comfort working with spreadsheets
  • Ability to follow procedures and meet deadlines

Preferred (But Not Required)

  • Internship or coursework related to non-profit accounting or grants
  • Familiarity with accounting software (Salesforce and Accounting Seed)
  • Interest in mission-driven or community-based work
